Salman Khan: Bollywood star denies driving 'hit-and-run' car

Salman Khan

Bollywood star Salman Khan has told an Indian court that he was not driving on the night he is accused of running over five men sleeping on a pavement, killing one of them.
The actor was charged with culpable homicide by the Mumbai court for the September 2002 hit-and-run incident.
Khan said his driver Altaf was driving the car when the crash occurred.
The actor is one of Bollywood's biggest stars and has starred in more than 80 Hindi-language films.
Several of his films, including Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aap Ke Hain Kaun, have been huge commercial hits.
The actor has always denied the charge against him.
If convicted, he faces 10 years in prison.
Late on the night of 28 September 2002, Khan's Toyota Land Cruiser rammed into the American Express bakery in the Bandra area of Mumbai, authorities say.
The vehicle ran over five people sleeping on the streets, killing 38-year-old Noor Ullah Khan and seriously injuring three others. Another person received minor injuries.
The prosecution has alleged that Khan was driving the car and that he was drunk.
On Friday, the actor told the court he was not drunk and was not driving the car either.
He said he got out of the vehicle from the driver's side because the door on the passenger side was jammed.
Khan is a hugely popular and successful actor, but he has often been described as a "bad boy" heart-throb.
In 2006, he was sentenced to five years in prison for hunting a protected deer, but was released on bail after spending less than a week in jail.
An appeal in that case is being heard in a higher court.

Facing multiple charges, Bollywood “bad boy” Salman Khan has denied that he was driving under influence on the night of the 2002 accident that killed a pavement dweller and left four others injured.
Accompanied by his sisters, Arpita and Alvira and a personal bodyguard, Salman was presented in front of the judge for a final testimony in the retrial of the case before the final arguments begin.
According to Times of India, the actor, who has been charged with culpable homicide recorded a statement on Friday morning denying that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and that evidence placed against him was “false”.
He further testified that his driver Ashok Singh was driving that night and said at the beginning of his deposition, “the accident was not caused by me sir”. Although Salman Khan’s bodyguard and chief witness constable Ravindra Patil had claimed to have seen him step out of his Toyota Land Cruiser from the driver’s seat after the incident, Khan’s justification was, “My left door was jammed so I couldn’t open it”. Ravindra Patil later died in mysterious circumstances in a Mumbai hospital in 2007.
Salman didn’t deny that he had been to the bar with his brother and a few friends that night, but he claims that he did not drink and showed bills to prove that he had only ordered water. The manager of the liquor bar identified that the actor had come to his bar but was not sure if he had had any drinks. Similarly, the waiter who served Salman’s table did not notice whether the Kick actor was drinking or not.
Under the Indian Penal Code if the Bollywood star is found guilty of the charges placed against him, he will be looking at 10 years in jail.

Katrina unveils Madame Tussauds statue: She has become a bigger star than me, says Salman

Actress Katrina Kaif has became the latest Indian to be featured at the Madame Tussauds museum. The actress unveiled her 150,000-pound life-size wax statue yesterday and while many have congratulated her on being chosen over her competitors like Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone for the honour, the biggest compliment came from her ex-flame, Salman Khan.
Bollywood Life reports that when Khan was asked about Kaif unveiling her Madame Tussauds statue, the actor jokingly said that he believes Kiaf has become a bigger star than him.

Kaif has become the seventh Bollywood actor to be honoured with a figure at Madame Tussauds London and joins the league of actors like Amitabh Bachchan (2000), Aishwarya Rai (2004), Shah Rukh Khan (2007), Salman Khan (2008), Hrithik Roshan (2011) and Madhuri Dixit-Nene (2012).
After coming face-to-face with her wax model, Kaif said: "This is amazing it does look really like me."
"Our world famous sculptors have worked closely with the Indian film industry over the last decade, and we now have a stellar line-up in a specially created Bollywood area - one of the most popular in the attraction," Madame Tussauds, hailed as London's premier tourist attraction, said in a statement.
Katrina, born to a British mother and Kashmiri father, was picked after she went head to head with competitors Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone to win a hotly-contested online poll last year conducted by Madame Tussauds, together with Panjab Radio, in which over 225,000 votes were cast.
"Katrina collaborated closely with the Madame Tussauds artistic team to ensure total accuracy and is delighted with the figure, which is portrayed in a dancing pose wearing a beautiful sequined white, silver and gold, two piece outfit," a museum spokesperson said.
Katrina's figure was created by a team of 20 sculptors and artists over a four-month period, using hundreds of precise measurements taken at a sitting in Mumbai and cost 150,000 pounds (USD 223,117) to create.
Madame Tussauds Studios London has been making wax figures for over 150 years with each masterpiece taking up to four months and a team of 20 dedicated sculptors to create.
Over 500 precise body measurements are referenced, real head hairs are inserted one by one, and countless layers of paints and tints are applied to build up skin tones to achieve a kind of astonishing realism that visitors flock to see from around the world.
The Bollywood factor has proved extremely lucrative, with Indian holidaymakers and NRIs forming a large chunk of the visitor numbers at one of London's most popular tourist spots.

Jacqueline Fernandez not a part of Salman Khan’s ‘Shhuddhi’?

Karan Johar’s much ambitious magnum  opus- Shhuddhi has been in news for the numerous delays that the film has faced ever since the inception. After Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor walked out of the film, Karan signed on Salman Khan to play the lead in his dream project. Jacqueline Fernandez’s name was floating around as the leading lady but it seems the actress is not doing the film at all.
At a recent event, Jackie clarified, rubbishing all rumours, “I am not doing Shhuddhi. I have not even been approached for the film”. There were numerous speculations about Deepika Padukone being roped in for Shhuddhi but later, there were reports of Jackie being roped in to fit into the role that was earlier offered to Kareena.
But with Jackie confirming that she is not playing the lead, we wonder who Karan is going to sign for Shhuddhi? Meanwhile, the film’s been on the back-burner due to another delay in the shoot. The film that was supposed to go on floors sometime soon this year might have to postpone its first schedule, owing to Salman’s prior commitments to Kabir Khan and Sooraj Barjatya.
The actor who is now busy wrapping up Bajrangi Bhaijaan will soon start promoting the film while he completes Sooraj’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, that is due for a Diwali release this year. It will be only after Bajrangi that Salman might get a window to start Karan’s film. But as of now, everything’s definitely falling out of place for Shhudhhi!

Blackbuck case: Hearing against Salman Khan postponed to March 16

A file photo of Salman Khan. Photo: Rajeev Bhatt

The hearing in the high-profile Arms Act case against Bollywood actor Salman Khan was postponed to March 16 as the Chief Judicial Magistrate (Rural) Anupama Bijlani was on leave on Tuesday.
The actor has been charged with killing blackbucks with the illegal weapons as the licenses of both the weapons — a revolver and a license — had expired, and the actor got the licenses renewed after the killing. Salman Khan has already been convicted for killing two blackbucks while shooting for the Hindi film ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ in 1998.
The two blackbucks, a protected animal under the Wildlife Protection Act, were killed on the outskirts of Kankani village near Jodhpur.
The actor also has three poaching cases against him. He has twice spent time in the Jodhpur jail — in April 2006 and again in August 2007.
The court was to pronounce the final judgment in the case on March 3 but gave the prosecution a final change to produce four of the 24 witnesses and three forensic reports, the applications for which had been filed in 2006.
Before this, the date for pronouncing the judgment was February 25 but was pushed to March 3 when the issue of these two applications came up and the CJM refused to deliver the judgement without deciding on the applications. In the last hearing, the CJM gave the prosecution a last chance to come up with four witnesses and three documents.

Hit-and-run case: Evidence of Salman's dead bodyguard can be used, says court

The sessions court in Mumbai on Saturday allowed the prosecution in the 2002 hit-and-run case to rely upon the statement of Ravindra Patil, an eye-witness who was actor Salman Khan's bodyguard and who died during the trial.
Patil, a police constable, died on October 3, 2007 in the midst of the earlier trial before the magistrate. The prosecution had said that his statement, recorded by the magistrate, should be taken on record in this trial which is being conducted afresh after the charge of culpable homicide was pressed against the actor.
Patil had said in his statement that he was sitting beside Khan (when the accident had happened) and had warned him not to drive rashly but Khan did not heed the advice.
Patil, who was the one to lodge the complaint after the mishap, had also said that the actor was under the influence of alcohol then.
On September 28, 2002, Khan's car had rammed into a bakery in suburban Bandra, killing one person and injuring four others who were sleeping on the pavement.
Judge D W Deshpande allowed both the prosecution and the defence to reply on Patil's statement. He said that opportunity would be given to Khan to explain the circumstances in which Patil made the statement.
The accused would also be given the opportunity to cross-examine the investigation officer in the context of evidence given by Patil and to clarify his own stand on it in the concluding defence argument, it said.
The value of Patil's evidence would be decided only later and not at this stage, the court said.
Khan's lawyer, advocate Srikant Shivade, had opposed the application filed by the prosecutor Pradeep Gharat, saying that it would cause prejudice to his client.
However, the court said that opportunity would be given to the accused to question the investigation officer on Patil's evidence and also explain under what situation the witness had given the statement to the magistrate.
The court also allowed the prosecution to rely on the statement of Dr Sanap who had conducted autopsy of the accident victim. Sanap now lives in the United States and therefore is not available in Mumbai.
Khan's lawyer said he will not claim that Sanap's evidence would cause any prejudice. He also accepted the post-mortem report
In another development, Ravindra Patil's brother, also a police constable, deposed today, saying that Patil died on October 3, 2007. He was not keeping well and had been suspended for remaining absent from work for a long time.
The prosecution examined him to bring on record the fact that Patil is dead.
The court asked the investigation officers to depose on March 12 and 13 on the evidence recorded by them. The case, dragging on for over a decade, took a twist last year when a city magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, had held that the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was made out against the actor and referred the case to the sessions court.
The charge of culpable homicide attracts a 10-year sentence. Earlier, Khan was charged with causing death by negligence, which provides imprisonment of up to two years.
